This map was prepared by the Pacific
Northwest Center for Geologic Mapping
Studies at the University of Washington, a
cooperative project sponsored jointly by the
U.S. Geological Survey, and the City of
Seattle, as part of an ongoing effort to
develop and deliver regional geologic data
in a geographic information systems (GIS)
database format for the Puget Sound region.
This online interactive geologic map of
Seattle is a composite of 4 individual maps
in various stages of the publication and
review process for 1:12,000 scale USGS SIM
series maps. The new maps are the result of
field mapping and data from more than 36,000
exploration points. Any use of trade, firm,
or product names is for descriptive purposes
only and does not imply endorsement by the
U.S. Government or the University of
Washington. GeoMapNW reserves the right to
revise the data pursuant to further analysis
and review. It is released on condition that
neither GeoMapNW, the University of
Washington, nor the USGS be held liable for
any damages resulting from its use.
This online interactive geologic map of
Seattle should be used to evaluate and
understand the geologic character of the
City as a whole. The data should not be used
for purposes of site-specific land-use
planning or site-specific geologic
evaluations. The map is sufficiently
detailed to identify and characterize many
actual and potential geologic hazards, such
as those represented by faults and
landslides. However, it is not sufficiently
detailed for site-specific determinations or
evaluations of those features.
Although the digital form of the data
removes the constraint imposed by the scale
of any derivative maps, the detail and
accuracy issues inherent in paper map scale
limitations are also present in the digital
data.
This map was created at 1:12,000 scale, and
so neither it nor any derivative maps are
meant to be used or displayed at any scale
larger than 1" = 1,000'.
